1962 - THE SPIRAL ROAD, it's got lepers, witchdoctors and Rock Hudson.

Rock's a Dutch doctor on assignment in Java looking to work with Dr. Burl Ives deep in the jungle.  Rock's also an atheist who was beaten by his father to believe in God so it's somewhat understandable that he has fallen away from the church.  While in Java he marries nice indy actress Gena Rowlands but cheats on her with a native girl while he attempts to steal the medical work of Dr. Ives.  There is a lot of plot in this film.

The whole film builds to a climax where Rock rediscovers God while being chased by the witchdoctor and his followers in a subplot added on to the end of the film that only makes a long film even longer.

Rock's been down this spiritual stuff road before with The Magnificent Obsession, but his strength as an actor was really in light weight comedies.  The screenplay doesn't help since it's overloaded with way to many subplots.  You can throw in the usual disclaimer of actors with American accents pretending to be Dutch doctors, but that's kind of expected in this kind of film.

The Spiral Road is set in the jungle and was probably shot on the same sets as Universal's The Leech Woman.

145 minutes.
