1962 - LA JETEE, classic French science fiction film is classic for a good reason
This film about a time traveler pretty much made the filmmaker Chris Marker's reputation. Marker called the film a "picture book" because of it's unique structure of using still photos as it's narrative device.
The format of using still pictures, choral music and solemn narration in a science fiction film screamed pretentious art film all over it. But for some reason it all worked.
La jetée is the film that was the basis for the 12 Monkeys which had Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt in it. In spite of that, the basic storyline of La jetée was so strong not even Hollywood could mess this remake up.
The film is short and impressive at around 30 minutes. Marker was smart enough to know not to overreach himself and had enough discipline to know not to push his time travel concept too far.
28 minutes
