2010 -EXIT THROUGH THE GIFT SHOP, a shaggy dog story
Street artist Banksy, puts up with an obsessive video recording Frenchman named Thierry Guetta. To get him off his back Banksy tells him to create his own art show.
Probably as good an introduction to the street art graffiti art movement that the average clueless person (me) will ever be likely to get. By now it has been extensively discussed regarding the film's actual authenticity as a documentary. But probably more interesting is the nature of this graffiti street art form. Is it art or merely a poser type of art?
There is some very entertaining stuff in this film. I particularly enjoyed Bansky's art show in Los Angeles and his assault on Disneyland. The portrayal of the Disney Studios as having a crypto secret police force enforcing and guarding their park was very funny. The documentary "Life Remote Control" that Thierry Guetta finally produces about the graffiti art movement is also hilariously funny and bad.
I doubt I'll be lying awake at night wondering about the validity of the graffiti art movement, but the film has some interesting things going on in it.
Highly recommended probably one of the better films of 2010.
